A Coventry eatery has been told to make 'major improvements' after receiving a zero-star hygiene rating. MAK Halal was recently inspected by the Food Standards Agency.

Inspectors visited MAK Halal on Corporation Street on January 27 this year and identified issues with hygienic food handling. Concerns were raised regarding cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage methods.

Cleanliness also required major improvements to ensure good food hygiene. Problems were found with the handwashing facilities and pest control measures, according to Coventry City Council.

Issues were also identified with food safety management and improved hygiene practices were needed. Systems designed to ensure food is safe to eat failed to meet the required standard.

Staff were also found to be lacking essential food safety knowledge. Inspectors questioned whether food hygiene standards were being adequately maintained.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: "All businesses that sell food in Coventry are inspected by Coventry City Council. Businesses are risk-rated and given a score for the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) to allow customers to make an informed choice about where they eat and drink.

"Based on the standards of food hygiene found during the inspection on January 27, MAK Halal received a food hygiene rating of 0, meaning urgent improvement was necessary. We have continued to work with the business to ensure that food safety laws are met, improvements are made, and the outlet is safe.

"Whilst improvements can be made by businesses following the inspection, they do not automatically alter the food hygiene rating score, but MAK Halal can apply for a re-rating. If MAK Halal does not apply for a re-rating, the rating will be reviewed and updated at the next planned inspection."

Why this lands now

For all the noise around launches and policy shifts, the pattern that matters most is repetition: one company acts, others follow, and eventually the exception becomes the rule.
